Wijaya Center, which started in 1977 in Maharagama with the open economy and then rebranded as Wijaya Group (PVT) Limited, is celebrating their 45th anniversary this year.
Founder Chairman and Managing Director, Wijaya Group, K. R. G. Wijesundara recalled that he started this business alone and today they have over 20 branches, four factories, a luxury boutique hotel in Matale and an umbrella factory and many other entities with a total staff of 3.000.
He said taking the right decisions at the right time and also taking calculated risks helped him to bring Wijaya Group, including CIB Mega City stores, to what it is today. “We are also making arrangements to increase our branch network to cover North and East as well.”
“Even today we purchase and market 90% of local apparels under their own brand names and give the local producers livelihood and exposure to move to their next step. In addition, we also set up a special company, for supplying garment accessories to the local market.”
He said that they have successfully navigated through two insurrections, LTTE terrorism, C-19 Pandemic and several other similar issues but the current economic crisis with power cuts, fuel and dollar shortage is the biggest challenge they had to face in their entire history.
Wijaya Group (PVT) Limited has also won series of awards including the SLIM People’s award on many occasions while its Chairman Wijesundara, has also won SRI LNKA ENTREPRENEUR OF THE YEAR (National gold award, extra-large category) in 2013 awarded by Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry.
The group also allocates a fair share of its profit towards CSR and worker welfare activities as well on a regular basis.
